Depression
Low moods can be a part of everyday life and we all experience periods when we feel sad or upset. However, depression is a very common psychological problem and is significantly different from mere unhappiness or sadness. Importantly, depression is not a 'bad' thing, nor is it something to be ashamed of as a large percentage of the population experience a bout of depression in their lifetime. We can experience depression in many different ways. It can occur suddenly or gradually, and can vary in severity and types of symptoms. Common symptoms include but are not limited to:
a mood that varies from feeling flat to very low and lasting for up to several weeks |
loss of pleasure in activities usually enjoyed |
lack of motivation |
fatigue or low energy |
loss of concentration and decisiveness |
feelings of hopelessness, pessimism or despair |
tearfulness |
anxiety |
high levels of self criticism and guilt |
